Three people were killed and another injured Thursday in a gun attack in Nakano, one of 23 special wards in the capital Tokyo, central Japan, where such attacks rarely occur.

In a statement carried by local news agency Kyodo, police said the attack, carried out by a hooded man armed with a rifle and a knife, “killed three people, including two policemen.”

According to the same source, the attack started when the attacker stabbed the woman before confronting the police.

The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital, and the two officers succumbed to their injuries.

In the same context, the police announced that after fleeing from the scene of the crime, they raided the building that served as the attacker’s hideout.

As of 1:06 p.m., Japanese police have not released the identity of the attacker or revealed his motivation.
