The possibility that Donald Trump could be accused of allegedly covering bribes to silence a porn star during his 2016 campaign is generating sympathy for the former Republican president, New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu said Sunday.
Trump, whose supporters stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021 to try to reverse his loss in the 2020 presidential election, said in a social media post on Saturday that he expects to be arrested on Tuesday , citing leaks from the Manhattan District Attorney’s office — and called on people to protest. He did not discuss the potential charges in his post.
“He’s building a lot of sympathy for the former president,” Sununu told CNN’s “State of the Union,” saying he spoke to some people Sunday who weren’t “big Trump supporters, but they all said… who he felt he was being attacked.”
Trump seeks 2024 Republican nomination. Sununu, a moderate relative, is considering a nomination.
A Trump spokesman said the former president was not notified of any arrests and Trump provided no evidence of any leaks from the Manhattan district attorney’s office.
No US president – during or after his term – has ever faced criminal charges.
Trump has said he will continue to campaign even if he is accused of a crime.
