At least five Latin American countries – Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico and Peru – were hit by earthquakes last Saturday (18), killing at least 14 people in Ecuadorian territory.
According to the Geophysical Institute of the National Polytechnic School of Ecuador, the coast of the country was hit by an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was about 30 kilometers from the municipality of Balao, province of Guayas.
The strongest quake occurred in Peru, with a magnitude of 7.0, with its epicenter in Tumbes, in the north of the country. So far there is no information on dead or injured.
Today (19), Pope Francis prayed for the victims of the earthquake in Ecuador during the Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square, at the Vatican.
“I am close to the Ecuadorian people and I assure you of my prayers for the deceased and for all who are suffering,” the Pontiff said.
