Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein left on Sunday for an official visit to Brussels, the capital of Belgium, during which he will hold an extended meeting with European Union (EU) foreign ministers.

The spokesman of the ministry, Ahmed Al-Sahaf, said in a statement published by the official Iraqi news agency that Minister Hussein arrived in Brussels on a three-day official visit to attend the third session of the Iraq-EU Cooperation Council.

Al-Sahaf added that the Iraqi foreign minister will hold an extended meeting with all EU foreign ministers during his visit.

Hussain will also hold bilateral meetings with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, EU Commissioner for International Partnerships, as well as NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and Minister of State for Migration in Belgium. According to the same source.

In December last year, Borrell announced a plan to organize a ministerial meeting between the EU and Iraq in the first half of 2023 during the second speech of the Baghdad conference on partnership cooperation in Jordan.

Borrell said the EU is a “true friend” of Iraq and is ready to support it in carrying out comprehensive reforms, stressing the need for everyone to respect Iraq’s “sovereignty and territorial integrity”.
