A 6.5-magnitude earthquake rocked an island region of Ecuador on Saturday, causing residents to flee buildings, but there were no immediate official reports of damage to people or infrastructure.
Social media users have reported some damage to buildings in the area after the quake, which had an epicenter 29 kilometers from the city of Balao in the province of Guayas. These reports cannot be independently verified by Reuters.

Authorities said the quake does not appear capable of generating a tsunami.
State oil company Petroecuador said there were no reports of damage to any structures and that “operations are continuing as normal”.
