Cristiano Ronaldo scored from the penalty spot as Portugal beat African side 3-2 in their World Cup debut

without convincing, Portugal premiered the world Cup with a 3-2 victory over Ghana on Wednesday. In the first half, the Portuguese had an uninspired performance. After the break, the match had five goals, emotion and nearly equalized in the final minutes. For coach Fernando Santos, who faces a long charge for better performances, said the team had too much patience to overcome the Ghanaian defence.

“I told the players at half-time that they had to be patient, but a lot… The match was so blocked… if only we have patience we won’t score. They understood and tried, they entered the game to change the type of the game. That’s what happened and the penalty came like that. Then we conceded goals that came out of nowhere. Nobody can concede goals that come out of nowhere,” he explained to CNN Portugal.

“In those moments of final tension you don’t see everything, now let’s watch the game calmly and assimilate what we need to improve. What should we have done? Easy, we had to keep the ball and go on the counterattack, we had the opportunity to score the fourth goal” , complained the coach.

The Portuguese team opened the scoring with Cristiano Ronaldo, from the disk. The playmaker made history by becoming the first player to score in five World Cups. The number 7 shirt was praised by the Portuguese press after his outstanding performance.

Left-back Raphael Guerreiro has said Portugal are on course for the World Cup. The victory places the Portuguese at the top of Group H as the other match ended in a goalless draw between South Korea and Uruguay. “The match was very difficult in the end, but the most important thing is the win. Let’s focus on the next match.”

Portugal will now face Uruguay on Monday at 16:00 (Brasilia time) and will finish their group stage against South Korea on Friday at 12:00.
