Jon Jones is expected to face Stipe Miocic in November in his first defense of the UFC heavyweight belt. But even without having climbed onto the octagon to compete for the title, the boxer has to deal with the mistrust of those who don’t appreciate him very much.
That mistrust reappeared last weekend, after Tom Aspinall’s victory over Marcin Tybura in London. The Englishman is already starting to gain space on social media to become a possible challenger for ‘Bones’, and, for the American’s ‘haters’, the one who will finally beat him inside the cage.
Accustomed to seeing several names come up as those who would ‘knock him down’ and then defeat him, Jones took to Twitter to make a (since deleted) post ostensibly comparing all the hype that has built up around the Englishman in relation to other similarly promoted rivals whom he has defeated.
– Everyone is next until I beat them. And everyone’s like ‘who is this guy?’ Before, (Cyril) Gane was considered the future of MMA. Best footwork, fastest heavyweight, most athletic. No one knows who it is… Jones shot.
Seeing himself as Jon Jones’ ‘target’, Aspinall wasted no time responding to the champion, giving a ‘prod’ at his possible insecurity at seeing an opponent who might be able to defeat him.
– Give us a break, friend – wrote the Briton.
