Wizz Air switches to sustainable aviation fuel

Wizz Air has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with OMV, an integrated international oil, gas and chemicals company, to provide Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) between 2023 and 2030.

The MoU gives Wizz Air the option to purchase up to 185,000 metric tons of SAF from OMV. This collaboration allows Wizz Air to achieve its objectives in accordance with its plan to reduce CO2 emissions per passenger-kilometre.

This decision reinforces Wizz Air’s environmental strategy to reduce its carbon intensity by 25% by 2030 and reach zero by 2050. Wizz Air is already leading the aviation industry towards a more sustainable future by offering lower CO2 emissions per passenger-kilometre in Europe, operating one of the youngest aircraft fleets in the world and promoting numerous energy efficiency initiatives.

OMV implements various measures to achieve its sustainability goals, and SAF is a key technology for the decarbonization of the aviation industry. The company’s goal is to increase SAF’s production to 700,000 tonnes in 2030 and to become a zero-emission company by 2050 at the latest (for zones 1, 2 and 3).
