Preventive maintenance: know what to always check

Providing preventative car maintenance is always important, even more so before you hit the road; check what to check

Keeping vehicle maintenance up to date is essential to avoid not only unplanned stops, but also accidents. Mechanical problems are one of the factors that can lead to unexpected events and even lead to deaths in traffic. Therefore, it is important to know when to perform preventive maintenance.

“Preventive maintenance can prevent the appearance of mechanical defects and even financial losses, as a damaged part can cause damage to other components in the car,” said Jeferson Credidio, manager of services and engineering at Nakata.

Several components must be periodically evaluated in the vehicle, including the suspension system: shock absorbers, springs, wishbones, bushings, pivots, cushions, stops and stabilizer bar. β€œThese are elements directly linked to the safety of the car, handling and also the comfort of the occupants,” explained Credidio.

Another primordial system that has a strong relationship with safety at the time of preventive maintenance is the brakes, which include multiple parts, such as master cylinder, pads, discs, linings, drums, fluid and brake booster, so it must be prioritized at the time of preventive maintenance maintenance.

Also, part of the safety issue, the lighting system needs to be checked frequently.

Fluids are also essential for the correct functioning of the engine, gearbox and differential. Therefore, periodically checking the level, changing the oil and filters according to the manufacturer’s recommendations helps to extend the service life of these sets. Another thing not to be overlooked is the fluid of the cooling system (radiator) in order not to overheat.

Sharp wear or deformation of the tires should also be checked as they affect the safety of the vehicle.

A good practice is to calibrate the tires every 15 days and periodically check the balance and steering alignment, as these elements, according to Credidio, interfere with the vehicle’s handling and stability.

The recommendation is in doubt regarding the overhaul of the car’s components, follow the recommendations in the owner’s manual and take it to a trusted mechanic to evaluate what should be fixed or replaced.
